Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease

Feline Urinary Tract Disease

Cat straining to urinateThere are few problems that are more exasperating than living with an indoor kitty that does not always use the litter box. We call this behavior “inappropriate urination” and it can be a sign of a variety of medical or even surgical problems. An intact (un-neutered) male may spray on the wall or on other vertical surfaces . This is territorial marking and the most effective correction is having him neutered. Urinating on the floor or in other unusual places may indicate an infection. Occasionally, inappropriate urination may be the first sign of diabetes.  But, the most common cause of inappropriate urination is due to bladder irritation that was formerly known as “FUS” – for feline urological syndrome. Since scientists love to rename familiar conditions, the syndrome was renamed “FLUTD” or Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease.

Whatever we call it, FLUTD can cause  bladder irritation that can sometimes be very severe. It is often provoked by stress. Male cats are at an especially high risk mucous plugs and mineral crystals can combine to cause a urethral blockage.

This is a true emergency as a blockage is a life-threatening event that will result in kidney failure if not treated. Blockage almost always happens in the males  because of their anatomy. Cats will urinate frequently yet not pass very much urine if they have an infection or irritation. If your cat tries to urinate and can’t pass anything, or if you notice evidence of blood in the urine, it needs to be examined as soon as possible.

Below is a list of many of the therapeutic diets we use in connection with treating this difficult syndrome.
