According to the U.S. Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook, cats outnumber dogs in U.S.households by almost 5 million. Yet, they visit the veterinarian half as often and receive a fraction of the care of their canine counterparts. This is in large part due to the stress of having to bring your cat to the veterinarian.
We at Oasis Animal Hospital believe that cats are important members of our families. We go out of our way to make your cat’s vet visit as stress free as possible. One important step we’ve taken is the introduction of Cat Night.
Every Wednesday in the evening hours, we limit our services to our feline patients. Having feline only hours allows us to minimize the noise and activity within the clinic that contributes to stress. We have a transition time set aside to make sure that all the exam rooms get cleaned and treated with Feliway spray. Feliway is a synthetic feline facial pheromone, a copy of the pheromone used by cats to mark their territory as familiar and safe. We use soft blankets on the table and provide “castles” that cats can hide in or climb on. Our staff members on Cat Night are trained to speak and interact with your cat in a way to reduce stress.
Though we can’t eliminate all stress, and might not make your cat LOVE coming to see us, we have received a lot of positive feedback about how happy our feline patients are about Cat Night. If your cat is ill, it might not be in his/ her best interest to wait until Cat Night to see us. But the next time you’re scheduling your cat’s semi-annual wellness visit, or a need arises in between, please keep Cat Night in mind!
